Referee Scholarships

Rugby Australia’s School Student Scholarship was introduced a number of years ago to help raise the profile of refereeing at schools, and to provide encouragement for young referees to remain in refereeing when they leave school. The program has proved very successful with a significant number of young referees progressing through the scholarship program to referee at senior levels in their state.

Students selected for the SSS program will be involved in a range of activities designed to improve their knowledge of the game, enhance their performance as referees, and expose them to a higher standard of rugby.

If you are aged 13-16 and would like to start on a refereeing pathway that will give you the best chance of winning a scholarship when you are 17, please contact us.

Each year, Tasmanian Rugby can assist referees with funding and support to travel outside of the state for various development opportunities. If you are an aspiring or current referee who would like to be considered for one of these opportunities, please contact us.

In November 2017, Hobart-based referee Craig Gardner joined the Senior Women & U17 Girls 7s tour to Sydney and Wagga Wagga. Craig was coached by Alex Richards from NSW Referees, and refereed a number of 7s matches between Tasmania, Victoria, and the Brumbies 7s. This development opportunity was fully funded by Tasmanian Rugby.
